Greetings to everyone! This is Sahrish here from 360 dog walker. So you have gotten a new puppy now what? Today I am going to go over some things you need to know plus two things you can start teaching instantly.
When you first bring your new puppy or dog home don’t throw too much on them at one time, in other words many dogs need some time to adjust. Since a strong relationship with your dog is essential, prioritize growing your bond with your dog as everything will be built on top of this, whatever your dog’s circumstances try to understand things from their perspective.
In many dogs or puppies’ cases this is their very first time being away from their moms and their little mates so they need some serious patience and understanding. It’s going to take months for your puppy or dog to take in this world, learn our language and understand how we expect them to behave. Keep that at the front of your mind during that first year of training.
Teach Your Puppy His Name
One of the first things you will want to do is teach your new puppy their name so that they can begin to understand that it’s their attention we want when we call them by their name. So the first thing you want to do is just get your dog’s attention on you may be by making a little bit of a sound like hey, come here like doggy kind of sounds. Do it again and again and after sometime just introduce his name. Call him by his name and when you see its attention say yes or good job.
Additionally, you have to be very deliberate when teaching your dog a new word, a new phrase or something like his name. When he acknowledged you say his name so he begins to connect his name with paying attention to you. After when he trying to acknowledge you, offer him something amazing like turkey or whatever you have in order to make an impactful or memorable experience for him.
Since when you are with your puppy at this age they are definitely in a supervised situation. You will have lots of opportunities to reward them for giving you their attention voluntarily or when you call their name. Really take advantage of this catch them off guard as often as you can and reward them heavily when they stop what they are doing to pay attention to you or respond to their name.
Introduce The Word Sit
Now after introducing your puppy by his name, move on to introduce the word sit to him. Most puppies are going to pick up on this really fast so you should be able to start phasing out the lure pretty quickly on something like sit anyway. The puppy will start anticipating when you practice it several times in a row. When you see that your puppy is sitting after you say sit treat him with another piece of turkey meat. Treat him slowly first bring the piece of meat near to his nose when he will open his mouth give him in a slow way.
Teach Him To Lie Down
Let’s go for some bonus content now and see if we can teach puppy how to lie down.
Again, you are going to do the same exact thing and you are going to go nice and slow reward him simply because whatever you ask him he starts doing it. Remember don’t be so greedy when introducing new behaviours.
Now with some dogs this might take a few days other dogs it might take a few minutes. It really just depends on a variety of factors.
After doing these things you will see the difference whenever you call him, he will come towards you and when you say sit, he will sit and when you say lie down he will simply do it.
